What to expect from your first Session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to feel unsure about what to expect. At Mental Health Counselling Geelong, we aim to create a safe, supportive, and welcoming space where you can begin your journey toward improved mental health and well-being. Here’s an overview of what happens during your first therapy session.

1. Getting to Know You

The first session is all about understanding your needs and goals. Your therapist will ask questions to get to know you better, such as:

  • What brought you to therapy?

  • What challenges are you currently facing?

  • What are your goals for therapy?

This is your opportunity to share as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable. There’s no pressure to dive into everything straight away—therapy is a process, and we’ll go at a pace that feels right for you.

2. Building a Connection

A strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation of effective therapy. During the session, your therapist will focus on creating a safe and non-judgmental environment where you feel heard and understood. You’ll also have the chance to ask questions about the process and get to know your therapist’s approach.

3. Exploring Your History

To better understand your current situation, your therapist may ask about your personal history, including:

  • Past experiences or events that may have shaped your life.

  • Your relationships, work, or family dynamics.

  • Any previous experiences with therapy or mental health support.

This information helps your therapist tailor the treatment to your unique needs.

4. Setting Goals and Expectations

Together, you and your therapist will discuss what you hope to achieve through therapy. This could include specific goals, like managing anxiety or processing trauma, or broader goals, such as improving relationships or building self-confidence. Your therapist will also explain how the sessions will work and what therapeutic approaches may be used (e.g., CBT, EMDR, ACT).

5. Practical Details

During the first session, your therapist will go over practical details, including:

  • Confidentiality and its limits.

  • Session frequency and duration.

  • Medicare rebates or payment options.

This ensures that you’re fully informed and comfortable moving forward.

6. Taking the First Step

The first session is just the beginning of your therapeutic journey. You don’t need to have all the answers or know exactly what you want from therapy right away. Your therapist will guide you and help you uncover insights, tools, and strategies to support your mental health.
